New Cases with the Omicron Variant of the Coronavirus Detected in Romania

New Cases of Omicron Coronavirus Variant Detected in Romania

The Omicron variant of the Coronavirus continues to spread in Romania, but also throughout the world, so that based on the information provided by the authorities, until now 8 people have been detected infected with the new strain of the Coronavirus in our country.

"Update December 15, 11.00:2 a.m.: at the Matei Balș Institute in Bucharest, XNUMX people were confirmed with Omicron, one from Great Britain, and the other was contact with a person from Great Britain.

World Health Organization (WHO): No variant of the new coronavirus has so far spread as fast as the Omicron variant!

"77 countries have reported cases of omicron, but the reality is that omicron is probably present in most countries, even if it has not yet been detected." WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Data from Romania in week 49 (06-12.12.2021).

Until December 12, 2021, 7.619 sequencings were reported to INSP-CNSCBT, of which 95 in week 49 (06-12/12/2021).

In week 49, 6 cases with the Omicron variant were confirmed:
-5 persons vaccinated with full schedule (4 with history of travel to South Africa and 1 contact with confirmed case);

an unvaccinated person – with history of travel to South Africa.

*From week 36, the Alpha variant no longer represents VOC.

The reasons why ECDC took this decision are the drastic reduction in the circulation of this variant in the EU/EEA after the emergence of the Delta variant, as well as the fact that there is little evidence of the impact of the Alpha variant on vaccine-induced immunity.

**A variant of SARS-CoV-2 belonging to the Pango B.1.1.529 lineage, with a large number of S gene mutations compared to the original virus, was detected in early November 2021.

On November 26, 2021, the variant was designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of concern (VOC) and received the name "Omicron".

Until December 12, 2021, the confirmation rate with VOC was 92%.
Given the fact that sustained national community transmission of the Delta variant was declared in Week 35, deaths caused by COVID-19 recorded starting in Week 36 are considered to be caused by this variant, except when other VOCs are detected (Beta, Gamma, Omicron or others, emerging).

Confirmed cases with the Delta variant.

Until December 12, 2021, 5.249 cases with the Delta variant were confirmed, of which 89 in week 49.

To date, of the 5.249 cases with the Delta variant, the AY.80 sub-variant was detected in 4.2 (1,5%).

Vaccination remains the best solution for protection against COVID-19!

By vaccination against COVID-19:

  • the risk of infection is reduced;
  • the risk of virus transmission is reduced;
  • the risk of hospitalization is considerably reduced;
  • the risk of death is considerably reduced."
