Minister of Education: Last Minute Decisions in Schools for All Students

The Minister of Education officially spoke about a series of last-minute decisions that were adopted by the government and that will have an impact on all schools in Romania and millions of students, targeting new funding to reduce the risk of school dropouts.

The Minister of Education explains below part of the way in which the Government's objective of reducing school dropout in Romania will be fulfilled, significant sums of money will be directed to schools to fulfill this goal in the coming years.

"It's about financing remedial activities, it's about financing some extracurricular activities. For example, children from these schools can participate in camps, they can participate in all kinds of events that will be eligible from this project. It is about the purchase of sports equipment, IT equipment and even, I don't know, clothing items, so I said that direct material support is possible, for the benefit of students and their families. It is also about the financing of school mediation activities.

All these activities will be eligible within the limit of this amount of 200.000 euros. This is a generous amount considering that the average number of students in these schools is 100 – 128 students per school. In addition, it is about the separate funding, over the limit of 200.000 euros, for the training of teaching staff, in order to know how to intervene in these situations that involve a high risk of school dropout.

Also this evening I sent to the Official Gazette the ministerial order for the implementation of MATE, the early warning mechanism in education. Both documents, the government decision and the minister's order, will be published in the Official Gazette, from today.

I have also sent the list of the 3.235 schools identified as eligible, in the sense that they are unfortunately at the highest risk of dropping out. From these 3.235 schools that will be published today in the Official Gazette, at the beginning of 2022, we will select at least 2.500 schools that are at risk of dropping out with the highest degree.

By March, a minimum of 750 schools out of these 2.500 schools that will be identified for funding, will have to already receive funding and the program will be up and running.”
