DNSC: Warning Regarding Fake Contests on Social Media

DNSC Warning Fake Contests Social Networks

DNSC issues a very important warning regarding the fake contests on social networks, and this is because there are many Romanians who have been deceived, and will continue to be deceived, by what is happening because of them, unfortunately.

"Watch out for contests, promotions or investment opportunities propagated on social media through sponsored posts!

Some of these ads are #scam attacks by cybercriminals trying to extract personal data, financial data, or credentials from potential victims.

At the same time, attackers try to get potential victims to install #malware on their devices, or to subscribe to certain services with a surcharge, by accessing a malicious link.

The bait used in such attacks varies from incredible promotions (drill for 15 ron), to the possibility of quick earnings (by investing in cryptocurrencies).

In order to convince potential victims of the veracity of the details provided, the attackers use the visual identity of reputable brands (in these cases Banca Transilvania and Leroy Merlin Romania).

However, if the user checks the social media page that publishes such messages, or the domain of the link they are going to access, they can realize that it is a fraud attempt, because they are not on an official channel of communication of the company on behalf of which that post would have been published. When you are not sure, manually enter the address of the desired website in the browser you use to surf the Internet!

Avoid accessing links from unknown or dubious sources.

If a deal seems too good to be true, check the company's official channels for this promotion.

Avoid providing personal, financial or login details if explicitly asked for online, especially if you are promised a quick win if you do!

Report such pages that propagate contests, fake promotions or unreal earning opportunities to the social network in whose space that post was published. Multiple reports in a short time can lead to the rapid suspension of the page that propagates malicious content.

If you have provided financial or card details following such social media links, we recommend that you contact your bank immediately to block your card and monitor your account transactions! If you have suffered material damage, you will have to file a complaint with the Romanian Police."
