Does Lemon Water Protect Against Coronavirus Infection?

Lemon water protects against coronavirus infection

Does lemon water offer any protection against the Coronavirus? In the last few days, many Romanians have had before their eyes information according to which lemon water offers protection against the infection generated by the Coronavirus, but it is completely false, according to the CNCAV.

Medical experts have denied the fact that lemon water offers any kind of protection against the infection generated by the Coronavirus, although on Facebook Romanians share a post that says this, because

"Another hoax, an old hoax, but with over a hundred thousand shares: lemon water can protect against Covid-19.

A text stating that warm water with lemon protects against the new coronavirus has been shared over a hundred thousand times on Facebook.

However, the claim is false: experts told AFP that there is no evidence that this is effective in preventing the disease and that practicing good hygiene is the best way to stay healthy. Local and international health authorities have also insisted since the start of the pandemic that lemon water does not cure a viral infection.

A text-only image claiming that drinking warm water with lemon protects against "this virus" has been shared more than 103,000 times on Facebook.

These types of false claims appeared around the world when the pandemic broke out in March 2020 and were debunked by AFP in various languages, including French or English.

The Romanian version of this old "trick" seems to be an almost direct translation of the others that appeared a year ago and were dismantled, for example in Australia, India and South Africa or France.

No official authority recommends lemon water

The Ministry of Health in Romania rejected the claims regarding lemon water and the coronavirus in March 2020. "Consumption of lemon (fresh or in hot water) does not prevent or cure the infection with the coronavirus", says a text posted on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Health in March 12, 2020.

The World Health Organization (WHO) does the same on its dedicated page on Covid-19 called "Fact or Fiction". “There is no scientific evidence that lemon/turmeric prevents Covid-19. However, in general, WHO recommends eating adequate fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy diet.''
