Romania evacuated its consular staff from the embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, after the city became the target of attacks by the Russian army, the authorities in our country explaining below the details of the operation that took place, and which ended today.

"In the context of the latest security developments in Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs that on February 26, 2022, the repatriation to Romania of the staff of the Romanian Embassy in Kiev was successfully completed, following a sustained inter-institutional effort. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu especially thanks all the institutions involved in carrying out the operation, as well as the authorities of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova for the support provided. During the entire operation, which started yesterday morning and ended this morning, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu was in constant contact with the Romanian ambassador in Kiev, Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.

Consequently, the activity of the Romanian Embassy in Kiev was suspended. Equally, the activity of the Consulate General in Odesa continues to be suspended, the staff of this consular office having also been safely repatriated at a previous date.

The MFA states that it made the decision to withdraw diplomatic and consular personnel in the context of the escalation of the security situation in Ukraine, in general, and in Kiev, in particular.

At the same time, the MAE informs that, at this moment, at the consular offices in Chernivtsi and Solotvino, the activity continues within normal parameters, with all staff.

The representatives of the consular offices are in contact with the Romanian citizens and are prepared to provide consular assistance, according to the legal powers, depending on the requests. Also, they are in constant contact with the representatives of the Romanian community in Ukraine."
