Up to 80% of European Union Citizens have been Infected by COVID-19

Between 60% and 80% of the citizens of the European Union have been infected by COVID-19, according to an estimate made by the European Commission, including the very large number of cases that have not been confirmed by laboratory tests, so not we are talking about an exact figure that European officials put forward.

The European Commission is now entering a new phase of the pandemic in which it will no longer place as much emphasis on mass testing of people, but will try to increase the number of vaccinations among children, as it will invest substantial amounts in the development of antivirals to treat the disease, according to Reuters.

"The European Commission said that between 60% and 80% of the EU population was estimated to be infected with COVID-19, as the bloc enters a post-emergency phase where mass reporting of cases was no longer necessary.

In preparation for this less acute phase, European Union governments should step up childhood immunizations against COVID-19, the bloc's executive body said, signaling it is considering plans to develop antivirals.

"It is estimated that between 60% and 80% of the EU population has had COVID so far," EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides told a press conference.
