Nicolae Ciuca Participated in the Operationalization of the Gas Interconnector Greece - Bulgaria

Nicolae Ciuca participated today in the operationalization of a gas interconnector between Greece and Bulgaria which will supply gas for all of Europe and ensure a much quieter winter even if Russia will continue to stop supplying gas to European countries.

I participated today, together with the president of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, and with high officials from Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Greece, Serbia, in the operationalization of the Greece-Bulgaria Gas Interconnector. This project is essential for the energy security of Europe, of our region and of strategic importance for Romania.

It is a turning point in terms of opening up the regional gas market and for the EU's access to alternative sources of natural gas. The interconnector inaugurated today will allow Romania access to new sources, such as the liquefied natural gas terminal in Alexandroupolis, but also to the Southern Corridor. Moreover, it will play an important role in operationalization

The EU energy platform for the joint purchase of natural gas. Regional cooperation and solutions developed together are the key to success in times of crisis. The completion of the Vertical Corridor is part of such solutions as it will facilitate gas transit to Central and Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans by connecting the Southern Corridor and the BRUA gas pipeline. This will provide access to gas resources in the Caspian Sea as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in northern Greece.

In addition, the decision taken at the European level and firmly supported by Romania, to use gas and nuclear energy during the ecological transition, gives us, political decision-makers, businessmen and investors, the much-desired predictability. All these investments and European and regional solidarity efforts, in which Romania is an active part, will translate into more accessible energy for our citizens and for the Romanian economy.
