Netflix discovered in 2019 how big is the problem of sharing passwords between platform subscribers, and how much money it loses from this practice, but the Coronavirus pandemic hid its magnitude, until recently. According to Netflix's internal data, approximately 100 million people who now watch content from the streaming platform do so without actually having a subscription, but only on the basis of other people's subscriptions.

Netflix loses billions of dollars annually because of these practices, and starting in 2023 it will ask people who do not have subscriptions, and use the platform from other people's accounts, to pay for it. Netflix is testing a system to block certain people's access to the platform, it has been used in South America for some time, but it will soon be implemented globally, according to the American media, and this will upset a lot of people.
At one point, Netflix was a supporter of sharing passwords between people in order to record an increase in the number of subscribers, even though the rules for using the platform prohibited this practice.
