The European Commission Announces More Humanitarian Aid for Turkey and Syria

The European Commission has announced that it is sending even more humanitarian aid to Turkey and Syria, which have recorded almost 40.000 deaths so far due to the earthquakes that occurred last week, and unfortunately even more people need help.

"For Turkey: as President von der Leyen underlined in his phone call with President Erdogan yesterday, the Commission will mobilize additional support and respond to Turkey's request for assistance.

Already 21 EU member states and three UCPM participating states have offered a total of 38 teams – Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain, along with Albania, Montenegro and Serbia.

In total, 1.652 rescuers and 105 search dogs were provided by European countries. The Commission is also channeling assistance from 12 EU Member States for emergency shelter items and providing relief housing units from the rescEU stockpile hosted by Sweden, as well as thousands of tent beds hosted by Romania to be deployed in Turkey.

For Syria: European humanitarian response capacity provides rapid aid to people affected by the earthquake. EU stocks in Italy and Dubai have been mobilized to deliver emergency supplies. It includes items such as winter tents, heaters, blankets, water, sanitation and hygiene kits and kitchen sets.

The aid will be distributed both in government-controlled areas together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and in non-government-controlled areas of northwestern Syria in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). In addition, the Commission is looking at opportunities for a Team Europe approach, working with Member States to mobilize shelter items from their stocks."
