"I had the great pleasure of receiving today the visit of my counterpart, Fernando Grande Marlaska Gómez, the Minister of the Interior of Spain. His Majesty is a true friend of Romania, and the bilateral relationship between Romania and Spain is a special one and is based on a very strong Strategic Partnership. I am glad that this visit to Bucharest by my counterpart took place in the year that marks 10 years since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership.
In the field of internal affairs, our countries have convergent approaches and that is why it is important to strengthen coordination at the highest level. We share the same vision regarding the importance of fighting crime in all its aspects and we are fully involved in fulfilling this desire.
Spain has a complex task ahead of it, as the future presidency of the Council of the European Union, starting in June, and Romania has an objective of major importance to fulfill as soon as possible – acquiring the status of a Schengen member state. Regarding this topic, I emphasized during the discussions that Romania is fully prepared to join the Schengen area and I conveyed to my counterpart Romania's willingness to work constructively.
In the spirit of European values, for the resolution of this file as soon as possible during this year. I would like to thank my counterpart for the visit to Romania and particularly appreciate the discussions we had. I can say without fail that this visit has opened a new chapter in our bilateral relations.
