Austria has sustained the pressure on itself with new very important official announcements that Spain made regarding Romania's accession to Schengen, and this because the country's interior minister says that he supports this process, but also that in September he should concrete results can be seen in the meeting of the interior ministers from the European Union states.
Austria tried to convince Spain to support its agenda regarding the reduction of illegal migration and the reform of the asylum system in Europe, but it did not succeed in a measure even as serious as it proposed, so the government in Madrid makes announcements extremely about Romania's accession to Schengen, this before taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Austria has made huge efforts to try to block Romania's accession to Schengen, including in 2023, but also that of Bulgaria, but Spain does not seem to be that keen to support its goals, especially as a very large number of Romanians live and work in the country, but it is difficult to say to what extent in 2023 Romania's wishes will really be fulfilled.
"We will work as much as possible to unlock this problem, and I am confident that the official meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Interior, scheduled for September of this year, will be the moment to finally achieve the expected results.
There is a need to abolish internal Schengen border controls, both those that should have been lifted a long time ago, such as those of Romania and Bulgaria, and those that have been unjustifiably maintained since 2015. Romania and Bulgaria enjoy of Spain's support for their incorporation into the Schengen Area."
