Ukraine and Finland have signed a long-term security cooperation and support agreement, marking a significant step in strengthening relations between the two nations and in joint efforts to counter Russian aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stressed the importance of talks with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb, focusing specifically on security issues and measures that could save thousands of lives. "Today, in the negotiations with Mr. President of Finland, we paid the main attention to security issues - everything that will allow us to save thousands of lives," Zelenski said, while acknowledging Finland's unwavering support in these tumultuous times.
Zelensky highlighted Ukraine's deep gratitude to Finland, stressing that this support is crucial not only for Ukraine, but also for the entire region, including Finland and other countries neighboring Russia. "Ukraine is grateful to Finland for the fact that, during such a war, your country and your entire society did not hesitate and supported our defense. And this is important not only from the Ukrainian point of view - it is important for every country in our region, especially for Finland, for all those who border Russia," Zelenskiy said.
Underscoring the seriousness of the situation, Zelenskiy added that Putin's aggression against Ukraine is only the beginning of a wider expansion plan and that it is imperative that it be stopped. "We all clearly understand that for Putin, the aggression against Ukraine is only the beginning. And they have to lose here. Together, we must guarantee security here, so that Russian terror does not take lives anywhere. This can be ensured," Zelenskiy said.
The agreement signed between Ukraine and Finland provides for long-term military and financial assistance, while strengthening cooperation in key areas such as politics, finance, humanitarian and reforms. It also aims to rebuild Ukraine's energy sector, assess environmental damage, strengthen border protection and critical infrastructure, and support the Ukrainian military.
