"Friday, April 19, there was an extraordinary meeting of the NATO Council - Ukraine, in a defense format, which took place in a videoconference system. The Ministry of National Defense was represented by the Secretary of State for Defense Policy, Planning and International Relations, Simona Cojocaru. During the meeting, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, spoke from Kyiv, calling on allied states to step up their support for Ukraine.
With a special focus on strengthening anti-aircraft defenses. President Zelensky highlighted the increased aggressiveness of attacks on vital civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. Allies responded with pledges to step up support, expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who are facing significant challenges. Discussions included solutions to provide Ukraine with advanced military systems and additional financial assistance.
The Romanian Secretary of State reiterated Romania's constant support for Ukraine and emphasized the need to quickly identify solutions to reduce the air defense capabilities deficit. Romania remains dedicated to supporting international efforts to ensure security and stability in the region.
The Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, met on Thursday, April 18, at the MApN headquarters, with his counterpart from the Republic of Ireland, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, who was on an official visit to our country. The dialogue focused on the regional security situation, with an emphasis on the Black Sea region and Eastern Europe. Also, the two defense chiefs identified ways to strengthen bilateral military relations, as well as within the European Union's Common Security and Defense Policy.
During the meeting, General Gheorghiță Vlad highlighted the contribution of Irish partners to UN peacekeeping operations, as well as to support missions of the allied military in Kosovo and Afghanistan. "The Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Defense Field, signed at the beginning of this month by the representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Ireland and the Ministry of National Defense of Romania, constitutes the platform for the development of cooperation on components of joint training and for increasing interoperability during the international missions in which they participate the military structures of the two countries," said the Chief of Defense."
