Minister of the Environment Official Government Decision LAST MOMENT MILLIONS Romanians

The Minister of the Environment, Mircea Fechet, communicated the approval of a crucial memorandum for the development of water and sewage infrastructure in Romania. The government gave the green light for the conclusion of financing contracts for projects aimed at expanding water and sewerage services in localities with over 2000 inhabitants, through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The adopted memorandum aims to implement the Investment "Extension of water and sewage systems in agglomerations of more than 2000 equivalent inhabitants, prioritized by the accelerated Plan for compliance with European directives". This is part of the Water Management Component and benefits from consistent funding through PNRR.

Through this normative act, the Executive opened the way for the contracting of all selected projects within the budget provided for by GD no. 1235/2022 and GEO no. 124/2021. The use of the uncommitted amount of 19,7 million euros from the overcontracting of the first call for projects, intended for the construction of 148,6 km of water supply networks, is also authorized. This is an essential step towards the achievement of the final indicator of 1.282 km of power networks.

Minister Fechet emphasized the importance of these projects: "Through the PNRR, we have a consistent budget for investments from the Water Management Component, investments that are vital for the development and expansion of urban wastewater and sewage treatment systems and water supply systems. The benefits of these more than 200 selected projects are extraordinary for the inhabitants of the targeted agglomerations."

In addition, for the implementation of this investment, the updated indicators are 1.282 km of water supply networks and 2.003 km of sewage networks. All this must be done in accordance with the provisions of the Water Supply and Sewerage Service Law no. 241/2006, republished and amended, until June 30, 2026.

The total financial allocation for this investment is impressive, amounting to 780 million euros, of which 600 million come from PNRR funds, to which 180 million euros are added from overcontracting.

The decisions taken by the Government in this direction represent a significant step in ensuring a water and sewage infrastructure adequate to the needs of citizens and compliance with European standards, ensuring a more sustainable future for Romania.
