How to install 128 GB storage space in iPhone

A few months ago I told you that you can increases the storage space of the iPhone from 16 GB to 128 GB, everything being possible in China, the country where various big or small stores promise to dismantle Apple iPhones to replace their NAND flash storage media.

In the video clip below you can see how the procedure of a increases the storage space of the iPhone from 16 GB to 128 GB, the complete procedure being presented in a timelapse so that everyone can see what this kind of change for the iPhone entails.

Practically, the NAND flash storage medium of the iPhone is unglued from the motherboard, its data is copied into a new storage menu together with the identification series of the device, all components being reassembled after the change.

Normally, the price difference between an iPhone with 16 GB storage space and one with 128 GB storage space is 200 dollars or over 200 euros, but in China the upgrade is done at the price of only 60 dollars, a much lower amount than in the case of the one charged by Apple.

According to the Chinese who do this procedure, the Hynix chip with 16 GB of storage space is replaced with a Toshiba one with 128 GB of storage space, about 50 such upgrades are made daily, so we are talking about thousands of dollars collected in every day for components that cost only a few dollars.

iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and older terminals can be upgraded in this mode with more storage space, so iPhone 6S cannot be changed in this mode yet, but it probably won't be that long until those with newer terminals can enjoy a serious upgrade.

For now, I don't know if such a change is possible in Romania, but if you know, it would be interesting to know where such upgrades can be made for the iPhone.

  1. However, how does iTunes react after the change? What appears in storage? From what I knew until now, based on the serial number, the storage is also located.

  2. it is not very difficult with the unsoldering and gluing of the nand, I did a lot of reballing on nokii, samsung, etc... (and it was much more difficult) the bad thing is that I don't have a R/W interface for nand if there is someone to sponsor me with the interface, I will make them for you cheaper than Chinese (a little more than half the price)
