1.2 Ghz dual core processors for smartphones

Qualcomm, one of the largest manufacturers of processors for mobile platforms, announced today the availability of 2 new processor models: MSM8260 and MSM8660 available for smartphones and other mobile platforms. The 2 new models of Snapdragon chips are clocked at 1.2 Ghz and benefit from multicore technology, each being equipped with 2 cores per chip and a modem chip for the baseband of the phone.

The MSM8260 model is compatible with HSPA+ technology, while the MSM8660 model brings support for multi-mode HSPA+ and 1xEV-DO Rev. B. Both Snapdragon chips have integrated: a GPS module, a graphics chip with 2D / 3D acceleration for Open GL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1, supports decoding/encoding of video content in 1080p format, and support for 24- bit WXGA with a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels.

For now, Qualcomm has announced that these Snapdragon chips will only be available for delivery towards the end of the year, so there are very slim chances of seeing them in any smartphone or mobile terminal that will be launched this year, but we are thinking of the future iPad tablet that could be equipped with a dula core chip or possibly the future iPhone.
