iOS 4.1 – release, jailbreak and decoding

iOS 4.1, the next big update for iOS will be released, similar to the strategy of the last years, somewhere around the middle of September together with the new line of iPods. This year iOS 4.1 will work not only for the iPhone/iPod Touch but also on the iPad tablet, Apple announcing at the WWDC conference that iPad tablet owners will have to wait until iOS 4.1 to be able to update to iOS 4.

iOS 4.1 has been blocking the jailbreak solution from jailbreakme.com since the beta versions, but redsn0w still works on iPhone 2G/3G, so on these terminals you can jailbreak the beta version of iOS 4.1 and you will probably be able to jailbreak the final version as well. iPhone 3GS with old bootrom can be jailbroken on iOS 4.1, so it is very possible that after the release of the final version of iOS, PwnageTool/sn0wbreeze will appear that will allow you to make a custom ipsw jailbroken for iPhone 3GS with new bootrom. For terminals with new bootrom, including iPhone 4, a new jailbreak solution will most likely be available sometime around October (at the earliest).

iOS 4.1 beta comes with a new baseband, so the decoding solution is also gone, so do not proceed to update to iOS 4.1 beta/final until a decoding solution appears. In my opinion, a decoding solution will be available at the same time as the jailbreak solution, so somewhere around October.

It is very likely that Apple will release iOS 4.1 in mid-September, immediately after the conference, so I warn you from now on to be careful with your phones so as not to "update by mistake".
