Is Apple working on a GSM accessory for iPod Touch and iPad?

Today the American Agency for Inventions a publicat 27 new applications for the registration of invention patents sent by Apple. Among them is the prototype of a very interesting accessory that could allow the use of the iPod Touch and the iPad tablet as a telephone. The accessory seems to have been developed to allow the respective terminals access to GSM networks, but it could just as well be used to connect to satellites or WiFi networks. This accessory would connect to the phone either through a cable, or by inserting it directly into the cable port, or through a wireless connection.

At the moment there are over 40 million iPod Touch terminals and almost 8 million iPad tablets in the world, but it is hard to believe that Apple could make such an accessory because the iPhone would become useless.
