What you need to do to save the data on your phone before restoring

Tomorrow a new jailbreak solution will be released and probably many of you will want to update to iOS 4.1. This update involves a complete restore and I recommend you to do this because it will get rid of the possible errors that almost always appear when using the "update" function in iTunes or the one for restoring a backup. I recommend that you use iTunes to restore to iOS 4.1 and then when iTunes asks you to select "Set as New iPhone" to be sure that you will not import the settings and possible errors of the old version of iOS into the new one. I always do that and I recommend you to do the same.

This restore involves the loss of all the data in the phone and their reinstallation, so here is what you can use to save part of the existing data in the phone:

  • the AptBackup application from Cydia will backup all the applications installed from Cydia along with the related information and after the restore it will reinstall all the applications as if nothing had happened. Before she reinstalls the applications, check to see if they are all compatible with iOS 4.1;
  • the AppBackup application from Cydia saves all the data from the applications installed using iTunes (or Installous), but unfortunately it does not save the application itself, only the tools. The .ipa applications installed from the AppStore or by any other method can be found on the phone in User/Applications in the form of folders that you can copy to the computer using ifunbox or your favorite file copying program;
  • the iBye application from Cydia saves a whole series of information and I recommend you to read it this article;
  • if you have advanced knowledge about saving phone data you can use it this tutorial to save almost everything possible from the phone's system files.

Using these instructions you will be able to save almost everything you have on your phone, but I recommend that you copy the pictures/films and information from the applications directly to your computer to copy them after you restore. If you know of other applications that save data, please let me know through the comments.
