Tutorial: Jailbreak any terminal on iOS 4.0 – 4.1 using limera1n

geohot released this evening the jailbreak solution called limera1n. You can find more details about it here, this article is dedicated exclusively to a tutorial for jailbreaking iOS 4.0 - 4.1 on iPhone 3GS (regardless of bootrom), iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G/4G and iPad 3.2.2). I do not recommend you to use the hacktivation from limera1n because it is possible that you will not be able to use the phone function. I used it and although my terminal is never locked, I still have no signal at all. The icons for Cydia and the limera1n application do not appear at all in SpringBoard, so the solution is not yet bug free. If the icons do not appear, reset the terminal and everything will be ok. Do not forget to install the zaone application from Cydia after jailbreaking.

If you need decoding, do not update to iOS 4.1 because you will lose the possibility of decoding.

UPDATED : Works with iPhone 3GS with new bootrom starting with beta 4!

UPDATE 2: If you have an iPhone 4 and want to decode it then you can follow this tutorial to update to iOS 4.1 without baseband update. If you follow it closely you will succeed! Tested by me.

UPDATE 3: Limera1n RC 1 Beta 3 appeared, details found here. RERUN limera1n beta 3 if you jailbroken with beta 1!

Although I still don't recommend jailbreaking using limera1n, here are the steps you can follow to do so:

Step 1

Download limera1n from here:

Then connect the phone to the PC, close iTunes and press the "make it ra1n" button.

Step 2

The terminal will enter Recovery Mode and limera1n will ask you to simultaneously press the home + power buttons, do this.

Step 3

After the image disappears from the screen, wait 1 second, then release the power button and the terminal will enter DFU Mode.

After the terminal enters DFU Mode, the jailbreak will be implemented and you will see the limera1n logo on the screen. After the jailbreak is implemented, the phone will shut down. Press the power button to turn it on and enjoy your new jailbroken terminal.

Step 4

After you jailbreak you will notice in Springboard an application called limera1n, connect to the internet and open the application.

Step 5

After opening it, press Cydia and then the Install button. After installation, the phone will respring and you will have the Cydia icon in the SpringBoard.
