I don't know if Steve Jobs ever imagined that the Apple TV could be jailbroken and modified to allow surfing the Internet, but there is an application that implements exactly this functionality on the Apple TV. aTV Flash is a browser made by Fire Core, it is Mac only and only works with iOS 4.0 for Apple TV, but what it brings to the owners of this device is really interesting. Practically now you can sit in bed and watch any HTML5 videos from any site, you can browse any pages and the best thing is that you can see everything on a large or small screen TV depending on your budget.

Here are the functions of aTV Flash:

  • Surf the Web – Experience the web in all its glory and stream HTML5 video from many popular sites (note: not all HTML5 sites are supported yet).
  • Discover New Music – Find new artists you'll love by accessing Last.fm radio stations, artist bios and slideshows.
  • Plex Client – Stream media from Plex Server running on your Mac. (big thanks to quiqueck for putting this together)
  • Info on Demand - Keep track of current weather and news feeds on your AppleTV.
  • One-click Updates – Install, remove or update plugins in a snap through the native AppleTV interface.

What's coming soon?

  • Go Beyond iTunes – Enable playback of additional media formats.
  • Access Media Anywhere – Stream media from most NAS devices.
  • Much, much more…

The application is currently in the beta stage and costs $19.99, but after the application reaches the final stage the price will increase to $29.99. My opinion is that the price is a little too high, but maybe it's worth it for Apple TV owners.
