Survey: What do you think about the latest version of the iPhone unlock solution?

Whether you need decoding or not, I'm sure you followed the news on this site and I'm sure you noticed how the last decoding solution was made. Practically, the Dev Team used a workaround this time and instead of exploiting the basebands from iOS 4.1/4.2.1 chose to port the baseband from the iPad to the iPhone terminals. This solution is on the one hand very risky and on the other hand it is a failsafe system for unlockers.

It is risky because all those who update the baseband:

  • they will receive error 06.15 at every restore (except custom ipsws with baseband 1015.x);
  • they will lose the terminal's warranty if they take the terminal to the warranty and the people there realize the update;
  • they could be prevented by Apple from updating to future versions of iOS, but I doubt that Apple will choose such a solution.

It is a failsafe system for unlockers because baseband downgrade is impossible and until Apple releases a baseband higher than 06.15.00, those who have updated can no longer lose the opportunity to use the decoding solution regardless of the version of iOS install.

This decoding solution upset a lot of people who were waiting for it, especially because it is full of problems either with autonomy either GPS. Those from the Dev Team were accused of working for Apple and trying to make the unlockers' situation more difficult, and there could be some truth in this theory, but there is not much evidence to support it.

In short, whether you need decoding or jailbreak, this last unlock solution could represent a small "preview" of what awaits us in the future. In conclusion…
