Google Docs supports 12 new document formats

Google has announced yesterday the update of the Google Docs online service which is now compatible with another 12 new types of documents. Google has been working for some time to implement compatibility with these new types of documents and it is quite strange to see that .xls documents are only now compatible with the service, but the update is welcome. Google Docs now also reads files in .psd or Apple Pages format, so you can upload and view almost any document you have on your computer now. Google Docs is a free service that can also be used on iDevices, but remember that you have a limit of 1GB for uploading files.

Here are the new documents Google Docs now supports:

  • Microsoft Excel (.XLS and .XLSX)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 / 2010 (.PPTX)
  • Apple Pages (.PAGES)
  • Adobe Illustrator (.AI)
  • Adobe Photoshop (.PSD)
  • Autodesk AutoCAD (.DXF)
  • Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG)
  • PostScript (.EPS, .PS)
  • TrueType (.TTF)
  • XML Paper Specification (.XPS)
