Last week we told you about a patent registered to the Apple company that presented a new method of charging our devices without using cables. Then it was assumed that it was about an inductive charging technology similar to the one already available in Palm Pre terminals. Those from MacRumours they investigated the problem in detail and discovered the WiTricity company that developed a new wireless charging method that we have presented in the clip above. The WiTricity technology involves charging electronic devices through the air without the need to position the device near a power source, as is the case with Palm/HP terminals. Basically, a WiTricity product would change the frequency of the electric current and transmit it through the air to another device that would charge and everything would be done wirelessly.

The magnetic fields of two properly designed devices with closely matched resonant frequencies can couple into a single continuous magnetic field. Prof. Soljačić's team showed how to use this phenomenon to enable the transfer of power from one device to the other at high efficiency and over a distance range that is useful for real-world applications.

The connection between Apple and the WiTricity company is made through the patent registered to the Apple company, where mentions are made of WiTricity's technology. In its patent, Apple said that an iMac could be a power source for iDevices and that they would automatically charge if they were positioned at a certain distance from the iMac. Basically, we are talking about the same charging technology described by WiTricity, but of course it is now part of an Apple patent. If in the end Apple will choose to use this technology or not, it remains to be seen, but we will surely have to wait a few years before we can use it.
