Apple releases a new update for Final Cut Pro X and Compressor along with a trial period

This evening Apple released an important update for the Final Cut X Pro program, one of the most controversial programs launched by Apple this year. With this update, Apple tried to solve a good part of the problems complained by users after the launch of the new version of the program, but finally offers the possibility to use the program in a trial version before purchasing it. All those interested can install Final Cut Pro X by athis page and benefit from a trial period of 30 days, after which they will have to purchase it.

Among the biggest new features to be added as part of a software update that will go out to users this morning is support for XML. This adds the option to both import and export projects in the XML format, meaning users can take XML formatted projects from Final Cut Pro 7 and other non linear editing software and work on them in Final Cut Pro X. That addition addresses one of the potential sticking points for upgraders, who were left unable to open old Final Cut Pro projects in the newer version of the software. XML support brings that indirectly, as users can export Final Cut Pro 7 projects in XML, then import them into Final Cut Pro X.

The new version of Final Cut Pro X brings, in addition to those promised by Apple, support for XML files, support for projects and events made with Xsan, support for fullscreen, for graphics acceleration plus many, many others. Apple is also working on an update that will give you the possibility to edit the video content from several cameras, but unfortunately you will have to wait until next year to be able to install it.

Here's everything that's new in the update for Final Cut Pro X:

  • Support for events and projects through Xsan, the company's technology that allows multiple computers to concurrently access storage
  • Support for media stems (or audio channeling). This lets users assign a "role" to media once it's imported, so that when it's time to export things like dialogue, sound effects, and soundtracks, those exports can be done in a single pass.
  • Custom starting timecodes
  • Full-screen view toggle for Mac OS X Lion users
  • GPU-accelerated export (was previously only CPU-based)
  • New theme called "Tribute"
  • One-step transitions on connected clips
