Did you get an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch? Here's everything you need to know - jailbreak and unlock

Christmas has passed and I assume that some of you have received or purchased a new iDevice, so it would be good to know what to expect in terms of the possibility of jailbreaking and unlocking. I will talk about all the iDevices that you can currently buy in stores, even if some of them cannot be bought in Romania.

iPhone 3GS

On October 4, Apple decided to keep the 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS terminal in stores, but unfortunately the stores in Romania stopped selling it. Even so, any new iPhone 3GS bought now comes with an unblockable baseband and most likely with the possibility of only tethered jailbreak. If your 3GS came with iOS 4.3.3 or lower then you can do them untethered jailbreak, but if it came with iOS 4.3.4 or higher you can only jailbreak it tethered. If you bought an iPhone 3GS older than 2 years, then you can untethered jailbreak it on any version of iOS, but the condition is that it has an old bootrom.

On the iPhone 3GS Apple is still signing SHSHs for iOS 4.1 so you can restore to iOS 4.1 directly from iTunes no matter what version of iOS the terminal has now and if you install iOS 4.1 you can do untethered jailbreak. The problem is that you will install a version of iOS older than a year.

As for unlocking, any iPhone 3GS with baseband 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 or lower can be jailbroken, no matter what version of iOS it has installed, using ultrasn0w 1.2.5 from Cydia . If you have a larger baseband then you can use redsn0w to install an iPad baseband and in the end you will have the 06.15.00 baseband which is decodable with ultrasn0w. Unfortunately, this baseband prevents the use of GPS and you will never be able to solve this problem.

 iPhone 4

As in the case of the iPhone 3GS, if your terminal came with iOS 4.3.3 or lower then you can do them untethered jailbreak, but if it came with iOS 4.3.4 or higher, you can only jailbreak it tethered. The good part is that any iPhone 4 can be jailbroken, so from this point of view you don't have to worry.

On the unlock side, things are a bit complicated because ultrasn0w unlocks only for the 01.59.00 baseband of the iPhone 4. If you have a baseband whose value is between 01.59.00 and 04.10.01, then you can only do the decoding using a Gevey 3G card. These cards also work with iOS 5, but the condition is that you have the maximum baseband 04.10.01. If you have a baseband with a higher value, you cannot unlock or change the baseband.

 iPhone 4S

This terminal cannot be jailbroken or jailbroken.

 iPad 1

This tablet model can be jailbroken on any version of iOS. If your tablet has iOS 4.3.3 or lower then that jailbreak is untethered and if it comes with iOS 4.3.4 or higher then the jailbreak is tethered. All iPad tablets are decoded from the factory, so you don't have to worry about this.

 iPad 2

Only iPad 2 tablets with iOS 4.3.3 can be jailbroken and the jailbreak is untethered. Unfortunately, if your tablet has an iOS version higher than 4.3.3, you will not be able to jailbreak it. You can't downgrade iOS without an already saved SHSH, so for now all you have to do is wait for the release of the new untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5.0.1. All iPad tablets are decoded from the factory, but iPad 2 is sold in 2 versions: one CDMA and one GSM. CDMA tablets cannot be used in Romania, so be careful what you plan to buy.

 iPod Touch 3G / 4G

Any iPod Touch 3G/4G can be jailbroken no matter what version of iOS it has. Unfortunately, if the iOS version is 4.3.4 or higher, the jailbreak is tethered, and if the iOS version is lower than 4.3.3, then the jailbreak is untethered. iPod Touches do not have 3G connectivity, so there is no need for decoding.

If you bought a new iDevice that you cannot untethered jailbreak or unlock, it would be good to arm yourself with patience because you cannot downgrade baseband and if the device is new then you definitely do not have SHSH saved so you cannot downgrade for iOS either .
