Tutorial: Transfer the iTunes library from one computer to another (Mac, Windows)

If you've had an iDevice for a while, you've probably used iTunes at least once and you know that this program is a constant source of nerves and problems. If you only use one computer with iTunes, then the problems should be quite few and of low intensity, but if you use an iDevice on several computers, then you know that synchronization without losing at least part of the data is impossible. If you ever think of selling your Mac and buying another or switching to a PC, then things get even more complicated because you can only transfer data through complex procedures. At the moment there is no simple method to transfer the iTunes library from a PC to a Mac, but below you have described a method by which you can transfer iTunes libraries between Macs or PCs.

Before you start procedures you should know that if you have a lot of applications or songs in iTunes then the process will take a long time because all those files must be copied between your computers.

iTunes library transfer between two Macs

1. Close iTunes on both computers and disconnect your iDevices from them to make sure you don't lose data.

2. Open the folder on both Macs Users/user/Music and copy the entire iTunes folder from the main Mac to the new one. The process could take several hours if you have a lot of music and many applications.

3. After the previous procedure is finished, copy the folder to the new Mac /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/

4. Finally, copy the file to the new Mac /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist

After finishing the procedure, open iTunes and you should have all the music and all the available applications there.

iTunes library transfer between two Windows computers

1. Close iTunes on both computers and disconnect your iDevices from them to make sure you don't lose data.

2. Open the folder on both computers C:\Users\USERNAME\Music\ and copy the whole folder from the main computer to the new one iTunes. The process could take several hours if you have a lot of music and many applications.

3. After the previous procedure is finished, copy the folder to the new computer C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\

4. Finally, copy the folder to the new computer C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences\

5. If you have anything other than Windows 7, then you can also find the backups in this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

After finishing the procedure, open iTunes and you should have all the music and all the available applications there.

Between a Mac and a PC, you could use the sharing function on the Mac, but the process is a bit more complex. The process is also necessary when you reinstall the Windows operating system or Mac OS X. In these cases, you can copy the library to another partition of your hard disk.
