An Anonymous hacker claims to have breached the iCloud account of an Irish National Police chief

Yesterday, the FBI boasted that it had arrested several high-profile members of LulzSec, a group of hackers who allegedly caused billions of dollars in losses to private companies and governments around the world. The theory that the leader of LulzSec would have collaborated with the FBI to catch the other members was discussed, but until now no one would have confirmed this with 100% certainty. Leaving aside the efforts to catch the hackers, we move on to an interesting piece of information according to which the iCloud account of the head of the cybercrime division (crimes committed in the online environment) of the Irish National Police was allegedly hacked by a member of Anonymous.

He was released after his arrest, however, and promptly went back out and infiltrated Garda e-mail accounts. On January 9, 2012, he even boasted to CW that he had "just got into the iCloud [account] for the head of a national police cyber crime unit. I have all his contacts and can track his location 24/7."

The interesting part is that the hacker could have tracked the person's location via GPS and saved their entire contact book, the Find My iPhone service being responsible for GPS location. For now, it is not known how he could have hacked the respective iCloud account, but I assume that he would have managed to discover its password and would not have used any exploit to gain access to Apple's servers. If the iCloud servers were exploited then we can expect much more information to be revealed in the future.
