Cardiio – Touchless Camera Pulse Sensor takes your pulse using an iPhone

Cardiio – Touchless Camera Pulse Sensor is an application launched only a few days ago in the App Store, and with its help you can measure your heart rate directly from an iPhone terminal. The application works with the help of the front camera and unlike other similar applications, it analyzes your face and the light refracted by it to calculate your heart rate. The developers of the application say that it works almost the same as oximeters and the technology implemented in it was developed and verified in the laboratories of the famous MIT university

Cardiio uses your phone's front camera to analyze the amount of light reflected off of your face; it accurately measures your pulse without any extra hardware. Just hold your phone and look straight into the camera to get your reading, then check out the dashboard to see how it changes over time.

  • Touch-free, real-time heart rate measurements
  • Beautiful and easy to use interface
  • Personal dashboard with history (daily, weekly and monthly)
  • Fitness level rating based on your heart rate
  • Estimate your potential life expectancy
  • See how your heart rate stacks up to others

Although there are quite a few applications in the App Store that measure heart rate, this is the only one or one of the few applications that use the front camera and the image of the face to display this information. Practically, when your heart beats, it sends blood to the blood vessels in front, they dilate and absorb more light, so less is refracted and based on this information, the application calculates your heart rate.

Cardiio's technology is based on cutting-edge research and science conducted at the MIT Media Lab. The measurement principles are the same as clinical pulse oximeters. Every time your heart beats, more blood rushes through the vessels in your face, causing them to expand. The increase in blood volume absorbs more light, resulting in a decrease in the amount of light reflected from your face. Using sophisticated software, your iPhone's front camera can track these tiny variations in light that are invisible to the naked eye to calculate your heart rate.

Although Cardiio uses innovative technology, it is not as accurate as a medical device, so don't look at it as such. Cardiio – Touchless Camera Pulse Sensor is available in a version that works only on iPhone/iPod Touch.
