Probably many of you already know that the applications from the App Store can be used in various ways if they have skilled developers behind them, and with some of them you can even measure the dimensions of objects. I am presenting such an application to you today, it is called CamRuler and allows you to measure the dimensions of objects using the camera of your iDevice. In order to correctly measure the size of the objects, the application has some predefined ones and measures the difference between them and the ones you shoot, and the final result should be quite close to reality. Of course, this is not the only measurement method, it having several implemented in the options menu, you having the possibility to choose whatever you think is correct.
CamRuler lets you measure (almost) anything that you can take a photo of. Now you don't need to carry a ruler around just to get a measurement – your phone's got you covered. CamRuler produces measurements by using a reference object of known dimensions in the image you wish to measure. Another measurement option is using a custom reference length, which can be used to get distance measurements from maps with scale bars, as well as length measurements on microscope photos (micrographs and electron micrographs) given a length reference. CamRuler's custom reference length mode also works well if there is an image of a ruler in the photo.
I can't recommend using the application to make important measurements, but for ordinary things, without too much importance, I think it can help you in moments when you don't have another device exactly at hand. CamRuler is available for €1.59 in the App Store and is universal.
