Apple acquired from Harley Davidson the right to use the trademark for the name Lightning

In iPhone 5, iPad Mini si iPad 4 Apple has implemented a new technology called lightning, allowing to reduce the size of the connector port of iDevices and generating many headaches for users. Considering that Apple patents all the names of its technologies, you are probably wondering if Apple has filed an application for the registration of the Lightning trademark. Well, Apple will not register this name, it being bought from Harley Davidson, the manufacturers of the famous motorcycles. It seems that the purchase was made only the other day, at least this is evident from the documents submitted by Apple to the European patent and trademark office.

Those from Harley Davidson submitted a trademark registration request in 2003, in 2005 they received the certificate, covering a very varied range of products and domains, that of computers being of course included. Considering that Apple uses Lightning technology in iDevices, it was clear that it had to buy the right to use the brand and it did so, but only partially. Those from Harley Davidson have kept the right to use the brand in certain fields, probably those related to their own products, Apple being able to use the brand in its field.

Apple has bought technologies and brands from other companies in the past, and this transaction is not abnormal, but it is very interesting.
