The revolution in smartphone photography will come from apps like FocusTwist (Video)

A few months ago I saw it for the first time Lytro Light Field Camera, a camera that allows users to record pictures whose focus can be changed even after saving them. The idea is brilliant and allows us to practically change the focus of a picture on any point we want, even after it is saved, and a similar system is available from this week in App Store. FocusTwist is an application that allows us to record pictures with our iDevices, the focus of those pictures being able to be changed even after saving them.

Capture and share twists, images that can be *refocused* later! Add a cool and fun dimension to your photographs and impress your friends and family. Twists are great for food, toys, fashion, nature, architecture – any scene with multiple elements to focus on. For best results, compose a scene with something interesting very close to your phone's camera (3-4 inches away) and something else further away (> 5 feet). Try to hold the phone still during the few seconds it takes to capture a twist.

To allow such functionality in mobile terminals, FocusTwist simultaneously records several pictures with the focus placed at various angles, and when the user wants to change the focus, he can do so and a picture with a different focus is displayed. The technology is not perfect, especially since in order to have perfectly focused pictures a tripod must be used, but at least we now have the possibility to benefit from this technology in our iDevices without buying a special camera which is not that cheap.

Although at first glance the technology does not seem so extraordinary, the company that will manage to implement a 100% native functional system in the camera of a smartphone could have a serious advantage over the competitors. If Apple did this, it could finally come up with useful functions that users would fully appreciate, especially since idevices are in the top of the terminals with which the most pictures are taken. I hope that Apple will at least think about such a technology for iDevices and I hope that we will have it available in the future in iOS.
