Apple to lose $900 million by giving away OS X Mavericks and iLife/iWork suites for free

Week Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), surprised the whole world by announcing that it will give you free OS X Mavericks, the latest version of OS X, but also the new versions of iOS/OS X applications: Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto, iMovie si Garage band. By making this brave move, Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), it forces its competitors to act in a similar manner, but at the same time it is forced to give up to a part of the profit, almost 1 billion dollars, the costs representing the money collected from the sale of these software products.

We are turning the industry on its ear. So we are now making iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote available as free downloads to customers who purchased new iOS devices, and we are also making Mavericks and future updates free to our Mac customers. As a result of these additional rights and features, we are deferring a greater portion of sales of each iOS device.

Basically, in the long term, Apple expects to lose this amount of money from the profit of each fiscal quarter, and calculating it for product types, Apple will lose between $15 and $20 for iDevices plus between $20 - $40 for Macs -hate. The amount lost by Apple is small compared to the long-term gains, but also the radical change it imposes on the industry, and now we just have to see how its competitors will react and what else we will get for free.
