OS X Yosemite – Handoff compatibility, Instant HotSpot, phone calls and SMS Relay

  OS X Yosemite was released on Thursday evening to Mac owners around the world, and although the company's latest products Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), are compatible with all its new features, unfortunately the old ones will not benefit from the same. To help users more easily discover which features are compatible with each type of Mac running OS X Yosemite, the company Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), created a special page on its website, listing all features and compatibility.

Handoff and Instant HotSpot

 Handoff requires the use of an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with iOS 8. Instant Hotspot requires the use of a running iPhone or iPad tablet iOS 8.1.

Handoff and Instant Hotspot. Supported by the following Mac models:

  • MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
  • iMac (2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (2012 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Phone calls

  Requires use of an iPhone with an active data plan.

SMS Relay

  It only works with iPhone terminals that have iOS 8.1 installed.

AirDrop

  Mac and iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch compatibility exists between the following Mac models:

  • MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
  • iMac (2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (2012 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)

AirDrop compatibility between Macs is possible between the following Mac models:

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
  • iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010 or newer)
