iPhone 6S – Apple distances itself from Samsung again

TSMC A9

The iPhone 6S will be released in the fall this year by the Apple company and according to all the information published so far, it will come with an A9 chip that will contain a new processor and much faster DDR4 RAM. Although it was thought that Samsung would take over a good part of the orders for the chips dedicated to the iPhone 6S, iPad Air 3, etc., it seems that Apple intends to continue giving a much greater importance to those from TSMC.

Asian analysts say that TSMC has the ability to produce more chips without defects than Samsung, so Apple would prefer to buy more components from it than from Samsung. Moreover, the future A9X chip to be used in the iPad Air 3, or perhaps even the iPad Pro, would be produced exclusively by those from TSMC, Samsung going to manufacture only chips dedicated to the iPhone 6S and 6S iPhone Plus.

We believe TSMC will earn most of the A9 orders thanks to its superior yield ramp and manufacturing excellence in mass-production. We expect TSMC to earn all of Apple's A9X orders (for the next generation iPad) and most of the A9 (for the next generation of iPhone), aggregating to an allocation of over 70%.

In this idea, it is estimated that TSMC would produce up to 70% of the chips of the future iDevices, the percentage being similar to that recorded during this year for the production of the A8 and A8X chips. Considering that Samsung partially gave up buying Qualcomm processors and produces components for its own smartphones, probably the decision from Apple is not received with so much disappointment in South Korea.

Regarding iPhone 6S news, well the rumors published so far have suggested that the new Apple product will bring 2 GB DDR4 RAM, Apple Watch's Force Touch technology, a pink case and a potential Apple SIM.
