The differences between Wi-Fi call and VoIP call on iPhone, everything you need to know

Last weekend, Orange Romania started to allow the activation of the function Wi-Fi calling on iPhone, and many people do not know what this type of calls means and what is the difference between them and the phone calls that can be made by various messaging applications, or even FaceTime.

The confusion comes from the fact that most make those VoIP calls over Wi-Fi using messaging applications and consider that the Wi-Fi call function on the iPhone has exactly the same role, but in reality the differences between them are big and in this article we will discuss them .

VoIP calls can only be made using an internet connection and only in the application/system that allows them, so you can make WhatsApp Messenger calls only in WhatsApp Messenger and only if the person you are calling has an active internet connection.

The same is also true for FaceTime or Facebook Messengr, but applications such as Skype or Viber allow you to make VoIP calls to GSM numbers, but you have to pay separately for each minute spoken, few applications offer this functionality.

Wi-Fi calls still work using a Wi-Fi connection, but unlike VoIP calls, they can only be used if you don't have a strong enough GSM signal on your phone to make a normal phone call to another phone number.

In this situation, you can make a Wi-Fi call to any phone number, landline or mobile, from anywhere on the planet, the minutes spoken being consumed from your mobile phone subscription, as if you were making a normal GSM phone call from your phone .

Wi-Fi calls are available free of charge and can ONLY be made from within Romania, so if you are in another country and roaming, you will not benefit from the Wi-Fi call function, so you will only be limited to phone calls normal.

In conclusion, VoIP calls only work if both users have active internet connections, in 90% of cases, only if both people have the same application from which the call was initiated.

Wi-Fi calls allow you to make GSM calls when you don't have a strong enough GSM signal, they consume minutes from your mobile phone subscription, and the call can be made to any phone number, no matter what mobile phone or landline the other person has.
