Apple may abandon the collaboration with Intel for the iPhone

Apple could give up Intel modems for the iPhone because of the inferior performance of those manufactured by Qualcomm.

iPhone 7 it is the first Apple smartphone that has integrated components manufactured by Intel, they produce the modem chip used in most of the terminals that are part of this series. Unfortunately for Apple, the Americans discovered that the iPhone 7 has low 4G speeds due to the new Intel modem, and those of the Qualcomm modems would have been reduced so that there are no differences between them.

The Apple company is aware of these differences regarding the 4G internet speeds of the iPhone 7, and American analysts are of the opinion that it could give up on Intel. Those from Apple are still waiting for Intel to solve its problems regarding the performance of the modem chips, but if it doesn't succeed, there is a chance that the iPhone 8s will no longer have an Intel modem.

Unfortunately, Intel smartphone modems are limited to maximum speeds of 450 Mbps, while Qualcomm has modems capable of reaching speeds of up to 600 Mbps. Intel's future modem model, the XMM 7480, is also limited in terms of speed, while Qualcomm has modems capable of reaching speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Although at the moment there are very few networks capable of offering Internet browsing speeds of at least 300 Mbps, these differences will matter. Apple will wait a maximum of 2 years, according to analysts, for Intel to improve the performance of its modems, and if it fails, then Qualcomm will once again become the main supplier of these Apple components.

"While Apple will certainly keep a second source if possible, it isn't going to do so for too long if it has to handicap half of its devices. This should give QCOM a path towards recapturing all of Apple over the next two years if Intel doesn't find an answer. Currently, the next generation INTC XMM 7480 modem is still capped at 450 mb/s. QCOM has already introduced the X16 modem, capable of 1 gb/s, the first gigabit modem."
