Twitter announced during this day that it was going to increase to 280 characters the limit of messages that can be sent through its messaging platform, this being practically a doubling of the current limit.
Twitter says it is making this change to help its users become much more expressive in the messages they publish, and doubling the limit will certainly contribute to that. Twitter has already started to allow writing messages that have a maximum of 280 characters, so some users can use the new function and many others can see their messages, so soon you may see much longer messages in the feed.

Twitter says that users are frustrated by the current limit and that only 9% of messages have exactly 140 characters, a sign that people are rethinking their initial messages to make them shorter. In this idea, a doubling of the maximum number of characters for messages sent via Twitter will contribute to an increase in the number of published messages and to a reduction in user frustration.
Twitter hasn't said how long it plans to run this test to double the character limit, but certainly not for long.
