ANCOM proposes the porting of fixed telephone numbers outside the counties in Romania, a very important change for the local market.

ANCOM launched a very interesting new project in Romania, based on the proposal that fixed telephone numbers can be ported by users outside the geographical area they belong to. More precisely, those from ANCOM have in mind the porting of fixed telephone numbers from one county to another by people who move, this idea could lead to a big change even for the way telephone numbers are designed.

ANCOM says that the decision could even be taken to give up the geographical significance for the 9-digit phone numbers, so that the prefix should no longer necessarily correspond to the county where that landline is located. The idea of those from ANCOM will also generate enough confusion among people by giving up county prefixes, but the good part is that anyone will be able to keep their landline number if they move to another county.

ANCOM also says that for this technological change to be possible, some changes are needed by the telecom operators, something that could take quite a long period of time. Those from ANCOM propose that the changes to the project under public debate apply only from July 1, 2019, so until then the operators will be able to oppose and block this project, if it will not be to their liking due to the necessary changes .

"ANCOM proposes in a draft decision launched today in public consultation that fixed geographical telephone numbers can be used outside the geographical area in which they were allocated. For example, a fixed telephone number installed now in Bucharest, of the form 21xxxxxxx (which is called by dialing the national prefix "0" followed by the 9 digits), will be able to be ported to any county."

ANCOM still wants to make a very good idea with landline numbers, and this despite the fact that at the moment the number of this type of subscriptions is much lower than in the case of mobile phones or prepaid cards. ANCOM has just launched this project, so it could be quite some time before it could be transformed into a real change, so it remains to be seen what will happen in the end with the idea.
