Apple has big plans for its iPhones, with the Americans describing in a patent how they intend to allow people to replace their current car keys with a phone. Apple also writes that the Apple Watch can be used in a similar way to replace a car key, thus eliminating the need to carry it with us somewhere.

Apple says that by using a magnetic field, an iPhone could be used for the car to recognize its owner, unlock its doors, and allow the engine to start. Apple claims that it can use both a magnetic field and radio waves to authenticate between the iPhone and the car, this method being, apparently, more secure than current methods.

Apple also writes that based on this system, an iPhone can be located inside a car, and the car could perform certain functions based on the position in which the phone is in the car. Practically, the car would not lock if the phone remained in it, it would not start if he is not in the car, or close to the dashboard, and it can offer who knows what other interesting functions for customers.

Apart from this implementation, the Apple company is also part of an organization that supports the use of NFC for unlocking and starting cars, Apple being willing to support this. Of course, no one knows how long it would take to turn such an idea into reality, but those from Apple want to offer people new options for controlling cars.
