Huawei. PROHIBITION to buy Processors for Phones

Huawei. The Chinese company is FORBIDDEN to buy processors for mobile phones, here is the important announcement made by the ARM company today.

Huawei processors

Huawei. After experiencing a ban on the distribution of updates for Android based on sanctions imposed by the US and the cancellation of the license by Google, the Chinese company now has another big problem. ARM, the company whose architecture is used in almost all processors for mobile phones, has announced to its employees that it can no longer sell technologies to those from Huawei, leaving them practically without processors for phones.

Huawei. The Kirin processors in the Chinese phones are made entirely based on ARM technologies, but as they are patented in the USA, the British company is obliged to stop providing the Chinese with access to them. Practically, any kind of new Huawei products can no longer use either ARM technologies, and this would mean that the Kirin 985 processor for the Huawei MATE 30 PRO should not have the integrated ARM architecture, which is a very big problem.

Huawei. PROHIBITION to buy Processors for Phones

Huawei. ARM employees were told to stop any kind of interactions with the Chinese company, and not even to talk with its representatives at conferences, otherwise they can be personally held responsible for violating US sanctions. This action by those from ARM practically completely blocks the activity of those from Huawei, who don't really have alternatives at the moment, and that's because all phone processors are based on the ARM architecture.

UK-based chip designer ARM has told staff it must suspend business with Huawei. ARM instructed employees to halt "all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements" with Huawei and its subsidiaries. It advised staff to send a note informing Huawei (or related) employees that due to an "unfortunate situation", they were not allowed to "provide support, delivery technology (whether software, code, or other updates), engage in technical discussions, or otherwise discuss technical matters with Huawei, HiSilicon or any of the other named entities".

Huawei. Both the Chinese, as well as Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, MediaTek, or Nvidia, made processors for phones based on the ARM architecture, and Intel, which had some processors, also suspended collaboration with the Chinese. If indeed Huawei will be able to launch the Kirin 985 processor without violating the bans imposed by the USA, then it will have a year to find alternatives to ARM, but it will be almost impossible without stealing British technologies.

Huawei. Having said that, although the ban on offering Android in phones was a very hard blow, the bans imposed by ARM represent an even bigger problem for the Chinese, because it almost completely blocks their activity.
