HUGE FINES for Digi Mobil, Telekom, Orange, Vodafone from ANCOM

Digi Mobil, Telekom, Orange, Vodafone fines

Digi Mobil, Telekom, Orange, Vodafone they had a series of very large fines applied by ANCOM because they did not really respect the legal provisions regarding the provision of services for Romanian clients.

Digi Mobil received a fine of 800.000 LEI from ANCOM, Telekom one of 700.000 LEI, Vodafone one of 60.000 LEI, and Orange one of 50.000 LEI, the first two being the ones with the highest and most important value.

Digi Mobil, Telekom, Orange, Vodafone were fined because none of the companies fulfilled their obligation to the Romanian authorities to cover 98% of the Romanian population with mobile phone services.

ANCOM has made measurements regarding GSM coverage in 13.400 localities in Romania, i.e. in all those with at least 10 inhabitants, covering 246.000 KM of the country, i.e. more than the geographical extent of Romania.

Following the measurements, ANCOM applied the fines depending on the percentage of coverage offered by each of Digi Mobil, Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, and the higher the fine, the lower the coverage.

Of course, the differences between the real coverage of Digi Mobil, Telekom, Orange, Vodafone and the 98% were extremely small, i.e. a maximum of 2.58% in the case of those from RCS & RDS, which received the biggest fine of all .

The value of the fines seems high, but Digi Mobil and Telekom have annual revenues of 1 billion euros, so fines of 170.000 and 150.000 euros are "nothing" for these huge groups.
