112 is the telephone number for the service at which any person in Romania, but also in other EU countries with the same number, can ask for help in the situation in which he needs the help of the authorities, and not only that. Yesterday the people from STS made a very important announcement, finally confirming that tests AML technology for more accurate location of callers who call 112 and I'm asking for help, for now only those with Android phones are part of the process.
STS vaguely explained what AML means, but it is very important that everyone knows what this service is and that it is not available on all types of mobile phones, but only on some of those sold in Romania. First of all, AML stands for Advanced Mobile Location, that is, when calling 112, the phone activates the GPS and takes the coordinates, which it then sends via SMS to the number 114, all automatically, the information reaching the operator.

STS implements support for AML at 112 because the phone's GPS provides a much more accurate location of the person, with an error of a few meters, compared to the current Cell ID/Sector ID location method. The current location method used by the 112 service can locate people in regions of several km, without sending the authorities directly to the place from which the call is initiated, but AML will locate with errors of several meters.
STS said that it first tests the localization through AML with Android phones, and according to those from Google, all models with GPS that have Android Gingerbread have integrated technology, and those with Android 4.0 also have ELS, something apparently better. In the case of the iPhone, Apple implemented support for AML technology only through iOS 11.3, so somewhere around 2018, but it doesn't matter if your phone is older, from 2017/2016, etc., as long as you have a version higher than 11.3, you have the technology already implemented.
The 112 service will be able to locate all these phones through AML when the technology is officially launched in Romania, but the other phones without GPS, Android, or iOS, remain without AML because they do not have the necessary technology to support the technology.
