Sony Electronics wide angle lens large aperture

Sony has announced a new performance lens for DSLR cameras, the company details below its technological specifications, but also the price at which it can be bought now.

Sony continues to expand its range of E-mount lenses and launches the new FE 14mm F1.8 GM (model SEL14F18GM) – a compact wide-angle lens with a large F1.8 aperture that allows users to capture the world from new perspectives, especially when shooting landscapes, architectural works, starry skies or various types of indoor spaces.

“The newest member of the Sony G Master range, the lens FE 14mm F1.8GM, offers outstanding resolution, fast and quiet autofocus and is extremely compact," said Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing, Digital Imaging, Sony Europe. "We are constantly innovating based on the needs of our customers and will continue to develop next-generation technologies so that they can manifest their creative vision."

Extraordinary resolution in a compact and lightweight design

The new goal FE 14mm F1.8GM has a compact optical design, measuring just 86mm x 101mm and weighing just 462 grams, incorporating advanced optical technology that delivers superb resolution and stunning contrast. Two XA elements (extreme aspherical elements) maintain excellent resolution across the entire image surface, right into the corners, all in a compact and lightweight design. Two ED (very low dispersion) glass elements and one super ED glass element make possible a series of optical refinements that suppress chromatic aberrations, providing excellent contrast and accurate rendering regardless of aperture.

Users can faithfully render point light sources thanks to the F1.8 maximum aperture, making astrophotography or capturing images in low-light environments possible without the need to use very slow shutter speeds. When shooting in difficult lighting conditions, Sony's unique Nano AR Coating II maximizes sharpness by minimizing flare and ghosting.

The objective FE 14mm F1.8GM it offers beautiful bokeh at an aperture of F1.8, even at a focal length of 14mm. With a minimum focus distance of 25cm, the new FE 14mm F1.8GM offers extended possibilities for close-up photos, but also for filming, creating a spectacular bokeh effect, specific to the Sony G Master range of premium lenses. In addition, its highly accurate XA elements, a 9-blade circular aperture and optimal chromatic aberration management allow it FE 14mm F1.8GM to produce a special bokeh effect in the background, without the appearance of the unwanted onion-ring effect.

Advanced and silent autofocus

Using two XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors, focus is achieved and tracked accurately even when shooting at a shallow depth of field at F1.8, giving professionals the confidence they need to take it all to the end even in difficult conditions. Moreover, the objective FE 14mm F1.8GM enables ultra-quiet autofocus with minimal vibration for smooth transitions perfect for video production.

Professional level control and reliability

The new lens also offers a number of advanced and versatile control options, including a focus hold button, a focus mode switch and a focus ring that ensure smooth, efficient and precise operability in a wide range of environments of photography. For further customization, the focus hold button can perform a number of special functions, which can be assigned using the camera interface. FE 14mm F1.8GM also features a MF linear response motor for direct and accurate manual focus. A ring that allows for intuitive aperture control is also included. For even more creative freedom, the lens FE 14mm F1.8GM includes a slot on the back that accepts standard foil filters, either ND, color correction, soft, etc.

A dust and moisture resistant design provides the reliability needed to perform in tough conditions. The front element of the lens is coated with a special fluorine coating that repels water, oil and other potentially harmful substances. The rear element is also coated with fluorine to keep the surface clean during the filter change process. The lens also has a built-in hood that effectively blocks excess light that can cause flare and ghosting.

Price and availability

The new goal FE 14mm F1.8GM will be available in Romania starting from May at several authorized Sony dealers, at an approximate price of 7800 lei.
