Romania Supported by Malta and Latvia for Schengen Accession

Romania is supported by both Malta and Latvia for its accession to Schengen in the next period of 2023, the first of the countries holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council at the moment.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan #Aurescu had a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malta, Ian #Borg, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, with the main topics being the process of #Romania's accession to the #Schengen area, the development of bilateral relations, as well as the intensification of cooperation at a multilateral level, especially within the #UN, in the context in which today, February 1, #Malta took over the rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu expressed his special appreciation for Malta's constant support for Romania's accession to the Schengen area and informed his Maltese counterpart about the recent diplomatic steps taken to achieve this goal, in the dialogue with the Austrian side, with the Swedish Presidency of the Council EU and with counterparts in most member states.

Minister Ian Borg reiterated Malta's support for Romania's accession to the Schengen area, appreciating that there is no reason for it to be unduly delayed, given that Romania is fully prepared, meeting all the necessary criteria. The Maltese official assured that our country can fully count on Malta's willingness to use all channels in the dialogue with the other European partners on this issue, Romania's accession bringing a benefit to all member states.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan #Aurescu, had a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Edgars #Rinkēvičs, on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, with the main topic being the process of Romania's accession to the #Schengen area.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, conveyed his special appreciation for Latvia's constant support for Romania's accession to the Schengen area and presented in detail the recent steps undertaken on a diplomatic level in order to achieve this objective, in the dialogue with the Austrian side, with the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council and with counterparts from most member states.

Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs reiterated Latvia's firm support for Romania's accession to the Schengen area, appreciating that there is no reason for it to be unduly delayed, given that Romania meets all the necessary criteria. The Latvian official expressed full willingness to continue an active dialogue with other European partners on this topic.
