Last week we learn that Apple had lost a new prototype of the iPhone terminal and that it used some agents of a police station in San Francisco to to search the house of Sergio Calderon, a man in whose house the lost terminal was located. Initially, it was believed that the 6 people sent for the search were private detectives hired by Apple who posed as police officers, but we found out that in fact a San Francisco police department sent 4 officers together with 2 detectives hired by Apple to find your lost iPhone.
Lt. Troy Dangerfield, of the San Francisco Police Department, told CNET today that an internal investigation has begun into determining how officers assisted two Apple security employees in their July search of a home in the Bernal Heights neighborhood for the handset. Dangerfield confirmed that the police participated in the search, but according to Dangerfield, the officers never entered Calderon's home. After Calderon agreed to the search, the policemen stepped aside and allowed Apple to go through his house, car, and computer.
Last week, the San Francisco police denied that it had any involvement in this search, then reversed its decision and admitted that it had sent 4 officers, and last evening announced that will start an investigation to establish the circumstances in which this event took place. San Francisco police say that no complaint has been made regarding the loss of the iPhone terminal and the entire action is now subject to an investigation to discover whether the officers acted according to the law or not.
This case is starting to resemble a soap opera in which Apple is silent, the police know nothing and everyone is wondering how long Apple intends to postpone the release of the iPhone 5. For me the whole story seems more than strange, but since the American police are involved and confirms the help given to those from Apple, something important was lost by Apple.
