iOS applications generate crashes more often than Android ones, iOS 5 is the main culprit

In October last year, Apple launched iOS 5, a new version of the operating system dedicated to iDevices. In this version of iOS, Apple has changed a lot of things and it seems that these changes have seriously affected users, as you can see in the graph above. Company Crittercism collected in the first two weeks of December data regarding crashes encountered by users on various versions of iOS and Android OS and from the graph we find that iOS generates more crashes than Android OS.

iOS 5.0.1 is by far the most problematic version of the operating system for iDevices, but iOS 5.0/4.3.5/4.3.3/4.2.1 or 4.1 does not fare better in terms of running applications. The main problems for crashes are related to the lack of updates for applications or the wrong implementation of some APIs, but we must not forget that some applications are made for certain versions of iOS but are used on others. The problem comes both from Apple and from developers or users and it will not be completely solved, especially if we also consider the jailbreak. Those from Crittercism analyzed 214 million crashes between November and December, but for the period presented in these graphs we are probably talking about a maximum of 5-10 million crashes for the iOS platform only.

Finally, we also have a breakdown of application crashes by iDevices, and of course most of them occurred on the iPhone, for this device is by far the most popular of the Cupertino company's offerings. I don't think things will improve in the future in terms of iOS problems, but if you don't jailbreak you will generally be safe from them.
