Here's how you can use Facebook Chat from the Messages application of OS X

Facebook Chat is a messaging system developed by the Facebook company for users of the social network, and through it you can quickly chat with any of your friends. Facebook provides us with a suite of applications through which we can use Facebook Chat, but there is no dedicated application on Macs. Those who still want to access the chat using an application, they have the opportunity to configure the application Messages natively offered by Apple starting with OS X Mountain Lion.

Everything starts from the assumption that you already have an iMessage/Yahoo account set up in the Messages application, otherwise you must connect using one.

  1. Open the Messages application and access the Preferences menu.
  2. Select the Account tab and press the + button located at the bottom left of the window.
  3. In the Account Type section, select Jabber. In the Account Name field, enter username@chat.facebook.com (username being your Facebook username, the one that appears in the url address after facebook.com/), then enter the password.
  4. Select the option Server Options and under Server enter chat.facebook.com. Next to Port, enter the value 5222 and then press Done.

If you followed the steps correctly, then the application should show you all the friends who are online on the chat at that moment.
