Samsung is negotiating an agreement with the EU in an antitrust investigation

A few months ago UE announced the initiation of an antitrust investigation to verify whether Samsung acted in accordance with the law when he used FRAND patents to act the company Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), in trial. If the antitrust investigation had proven that Samsung violated EU legislation in this area, then the Korean company could have been forced to pay fines of several billion dollars. In order to avoid the application of any fine, but also to escape without having to admit their guilt, those from Samsung is negotiating now with the EU a possible favorable conclusion of the investigation, probably paying a certain amount of money as compensation.

"Samsung has been involved in settlement discussions for several months now. Samsung wants to settle," said one of the sources, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The sources said it was still too early to say if the discussions would result in a settlement.

At the end of last year, the Samsung company withdrew its lawsuits filed against those from Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, claiming then that this action would be in the interest of consumers, but in the end he tried to solve the problem without being fined. For now, no one knows if the discussions between Samsung and EU officials will lead to an end to the antitrust investigation without Samsung being officially fined and bearing the stigma of a company that violated EU law, but anything is possible.
