ING Pay – my experience with the simplest and most efficient mobile payment system

Thanks to those from ING Bank, I had the opportunity to test the system ING Pay and probably some of you still remember that I already presented it to you a few months ago. ING Pay is a mobile payment system that allows us to pay almost anything using our iPhones, an application available in App Storethose from Apple, a special NFC chip and a case in which we have to insert the iPhone to make the connection between it and the NFC chip used for payments. ING Pay can also be used with other smartphones (full list here), but I only tested it on the iPhone.

The case offered by ING is elegant, quite pleasant to the touch, it protects the terminal in case of accidents, but it is necessary to make mobile payments since our terminals do not have an NFC chip included. The case is only compatible with iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, at the back it has a special slot where we insert the NFC chip offered by ING to any interested customer, and in the images of this article you can see what it looks like. Although this case makes the iPhone a little thicker after installation, using the system will convince you, you will probably get over this small inconvenience.

The application is compatible with ING Pay connect your iPhone to your account ING, the only step you have to take after meeting it is to enter the PIN of the card you want to use with the system. After connecting to the case, the application offers us two payment methods, depending on the value of the purchases. The first method allows you to make any payment up to 100 RON at merchants without entering the card's PIN, following that it must be entered for larger payments, and the second method requires entering the PIN for any payment. The first option is for maximum transaction speed, the second for maximum security, and you can choose the one that suits you better.

On this page those from ING list all the locations where the special PayPasses are available that allow you to make payments, and there you should see POSs that have the VISA Paywave logo (like the one in the first image of this article). Among other stores, you can find such Paypasses in Carrefour hypermarkets, in Helpnet pharmacies, in Inmedio stores, at KFC, Pizza Hut, Dristor Kebab.

If the location allows you to pay using this system, then do your shopping, eat, or do whatever you want, then at home the operator will activate the payment via PayPass, you will have to open the ING Pay application, access the Pay Now menu, bring the case closer to the device and that's all. Payment is made in just a few seconds without you having to enter any PIN (except for transactions over 100 RON) and without taking your card or wallet out of your pocket.

After making the payment, the application will automatically save an entry in your terminal in which you will see only the amount paid, the information about the merchant can be edited by you. Moreover, the application allows you to choose a category for your payment, in order to then offer you the option to filter all payments according to certain categories. Of course, all these payments can be sent by email if you want, this system being useful if you perform a restore or change the terminal.

I was extremely pleasantly impressed by the speed with which system payments are recorded and the ease with which the application can be used, and now I can only pray that Apple implements an NFC chip in iPhones or that ING have cases compatible with iPhone 5 / iPhone 5S. I have to admit that before using the system I was hesitant about its usefulness, mainly due to the fact that a case must be used and that the operators will not know how to use PayPasses, but to my surprise, the case is not bothersome and the operators were trained in advance on how to use the devices. The ING Pay smartphone payment kit is available in all cities that have an ING office and can be used in all the stores listed on the website, which I think will expand quite quickly, considering its usefulness.

ING Pay is only available to those who are or want to become ING customers, it has a connection price of 50 RON and an annual subscription of 50 RON, but you quickly recover your investment, because all payments made through this platform have 5% cashback, up to a maximum of 5 lei per transaction, so if you want to use it, with the first few transactions you will recover your investment, and then you can consider that you have a 5% discount on quick purchases made with the iPhone through ING PAY.

On this page of the bank find more details about the system. In conclusion, I thank the people at ING for the experience and I believe that next year many more of us will make mobile payments using iPhone terminals.
